Keeping Our Eyes on the Lord
By Pastor Joel – Open Heaven Christian Church – Fisher, Arkansas
A Call to Spiritual Focus in a Distracted World.
In a world filled with constant noise, temptation, fear, and distraction, Scripture repeatedly calls God’s people to fix their eyes upon the Lord. Where we place our spiritual focus determines our direction, our strength, and our peace. When our eyes drift from God to circumstances, we stumble; when they remain on Him, we stand firm.
The Bible teaches that faith is not merely believing God exists, but actively looking to Him, trusting Him, and walking in obedience regardless of what surrounds us.
1. God Commands Us to Look to Him
Keeping our eyes on the Lord is not optional—it is commanded by God.
“Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.”
(Isaiah 45:22, KJV)
Salvation itself begins by looking to God. Deliverance, healing, guidance, and strength all flow from a heart that turns its gaze toward Him instead of self or the world.
“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.”
(Psalm 121:1, KJV)
The psalmist understood that help does not come from earthly systems, but from the Lord who made heaven and earth.
2. Fixing Our Eyes on Jesus
The New Testament makes our focus even clearer: Jesus Christ is the object of our gaze.
“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross…”
(Hebrews 12:2, KJV)
Faith grows and endures when we keep our eyes on Jesus Christ—not on persecution, failure, or hardships. When believers become weary, it is often because they have shifted their focus from Christ to the struggle they face.
God is the only one that can truly help when challenges in life become so difficult that one does not know where to turn for help. Believers in Christ are instructed to look to Jesus.
3. The Danger of Taking Our Eyes Off the Lord
Scripture shows us what happens when God’s people look away from the Lord. The storms of life cause fear that makes people sink into desperate cries for God’s help to save them, and the Lord hears their cry and saves them out of all of their troubles!
Peter Walking on Water and sinks when he took his eyes off Jesus
“But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.”
(Matthew 14:30, KJV)
Peter walked on water while his eyes were on Jesus. The moment he focused on the storm, fear replaced faith. This is a powerful picture of the Christian life—what we focus on determines whether we walk in victory or sink in fear.
“The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.”
(Psalm 34:17, KJV)
4. Keeping Our Eyes Through Obedience and Trust
Keeping our eyes on the Lord is not passive; it is active obedience.
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
(Proverbs 3:5, KJV)
Trust requires us to stop relying on what we see naturally and depend on God spiritually.
“Thine eyes shall look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.”
(Proverbs 4:25, KJV)
This verse speaks of spiritual discipline—refusing distractions, temptations, and false paths.
5. Eyes That Delight in the Word of God
God’s Word keeps our vision clear and focused on Jesus so we can overcome by trusting Him.
“Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”
(Psalm 119:18, KJV)
A believer who neglects Scripture will struggle to keep their eyes on the Lord. The Word refocuses our mind, renews our vision, and guards us against deception. The word of God lights our path.
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
(Psalm 119:105, KJV)
6. The Reward of Keeping Our Eyes on the Lord
God promises peace and stability to those who remain focused on Him.
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”
(Isaiah 26:3, KJV)
Perfect peace is not found in perfect circumstances—but in a mind fixed on Jesus.
“The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.”
(Psalm 34:15, KJV)
When we keep our eyes on Him, we discover He has always had His eyes on us even when we think God was not present to help us. The Lord is an ever present help in the time of need.
“…God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
(Psalm 46:1 KJV)
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble.
7. A Daily Call to Refocus
Keeping our eyes on the Lord is a daily discipline. The world will pull, the flesh will resist, and the enemy will distract—but God remains faithful.
“Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”
(Colossians 3:2, KJV)
Each day we must choose where we look, what we listen to, and whom we trust.
Conclusion: Look Up and Stay Focused
When we keep our eyes on the Lord:
Faith replaces our fears
Peace replaces anxiety
Truth replaces confusion
Strength replaces weakness
“My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.”
(Psalm 121:2, KJV)
No matter the storm, temptation, or trial—look to the Lord and keep looking to Jesus. He is faithful to guide, sustain, and finish the work He began in you.
Friends, If you are going through a difficult time in your life, please call out to the Lord and pray this prayer with sincerity and the Lord will hear your cry.
