Fulfilling the Law and the Prophets Through God’s Love

By Pastor Joel – Open Heaven Christian Church – Fisher, Arkansas

Jesus taught a simple yet profound truth in Matthew 7:12:

“Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.”

This verse, often called the Golden Rule, is not just a moral guideline—it is the heartbeat of God’s law expressed through love. As followers of Christ, it is the love of God dwelling in us that enables us to live this command fully.

God’s Love as the Standard

The love of God is not abstract—it is practical, active, and transformative. When we allow God’s love to flow through us:

  • We act selflessly: God’s love moves us to put others before ourselves, seeking their good as sincerely as our own.

  • We forgive freely: Because God has forgiven us through Christ, His love empowers us to forgive those who wrong us.

  • We respond with patience and kindness: Even when others fail or hurt us, God’s love enables a gentle, merciful response.

In other words, the love of God in us is the standard by which we “do unto others as we would have them do unto us.” Without His love, our attempts to follow this command can be limited or selfish. With His love, it becomes natural and joyful.

Treating Others Through the Lens of God’s Love

Living out Matthew 7:12 means letting God’s love guide every interaction:

  1. In family and friendships: We show care, respect, and encouragement, reflecting God’s patience and grace.

  2. In our communities and workplaces: We act justly, honorably, and compassionately, seeking the good of others above mere rules.

  3. In online or public interactions: Our words uplift, bless, and do not harm, reflecting the love that God has poured into our hearts.

By allowing God’s love to guide us, we fulfill the spirit of the Law and the Prophets, which calls for love of God and love of neighbor (see Matthew 22:37-40).

Expecting Godly Treatment from Others

Matthew 7:12 also helps us recognize how others who walk in God’s love will treat us. If someone is filled with God’s love:

  • They will act with fairness, kindness, and respect.

  • Their words and deeds will reflect the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

  • We can trust that relationships rooted in God’s love are mutually uplifting.

This doesn’t mean everyone will always act rightly—but by focusing on God’s love in us, we are equipped to discern, respond, and maintain godly boundaries.

Living It Out Daily

To let God’s love guide us in fulfilling Matthew 7:12:

  • Pray for God’s love to fill you: Start each day asking God to overflow His love through your words and actions.

  • Look for opportunities to bless others: Speak encouraging words, help those in need, and forgive quickly.

  • Reflect on God’s treatment of you: Remember how He has loved, forgiven, and cared for you, and let that standard shape how you treat others.

When God’s love is our guide, the Law and the Prophets are fulfilled naturally. It transforms ordinary actions into acts of grace that honor God and bless others.

Conclusion

Following Christ is more than following rules—it’s allowing God’s love to flow through us, guiding every thought, word, and deed. Matthew 7:12 is a call to live in the love of God: treating others as He would have us treated. In a world filled with selfishness and division, this love becomes our standard, our strength, and our witness to the glory of God.
