Biblical Curses and Iniquities Passed Through Generations: God forgives sin and heals

By Pastor Joel – Open Heaven Christian Church – Fisher, Arkansas

Many people suffer through cycles of destruction, bondage, confusion, affliction, and spiritual oppression without understanding where these patterns began. The Bible reveals that sin and rebellion against God do not only affect the individual committing the sin, but can also bring consequences upon families, households, and future generations. Scripture calls this iniquity — deeply rooted sin that continues producing corruption and sorrow until repentance and obedience to God break its power.

God is merciful, loving, and forgiving, yet He is also holy and just. The Lord warns throughout Scripture that rebellion, idolatry, wickedness, and hardened sin open doors for judgment and suffering. These curses do not enter randomly; they enter through disobedience to God’s commandments and through persistent sin that is embraced rather than repented of.

God Visits Iniquity Upon Generations

The Bible says in Exodus 34:6-7:

The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,
Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.”

This passage reveals both the mercy and justice of God. The Lord forgives those who repent, yet He also warns that unrepented iniquity can continue affecting future generations.

Iniquity is more than a single mistake. It is twisted behavior, repeated rebellion, corruption of the heart, and continual sin that becomes rooted within a family line.

1. The Curse of Inherited Iniquity

Scriptures:

  • Exodus 34:6-7

  • Jeremiah 32:18

  • Job 10:14

Jeremiah 32:18 says:

…thou recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them…”

This curse enters when generations continually practice wickedness without repentance. Children often grow up surrounded by the sins, behaviors, and spiritual strongholds of their parents. Violence, hatred, sexual immorality, witchcraft, addiction, pride, deception, and rebellion can become repeated cycles within families.

The curse is strengthened when sin is normalized and justified instead of confessed and forsaken.

Job 10:14 says:

If I sin, then thou markest me, and thou wilt not acquit me from mine iniquity.”

This reveals that God does not ignore persistent wickedness. Unrepented sin gives legal ground for destruction and affliction to continue.

How This Curse Enters:

  • Persistent family rebellion against God

  • Refusal to repent

  • Normalizing sinful lifestyles

  • Teaching children ungodliness

  • Pride and stubbornness against correction

2. The Curse of Wandering and Affliction

Scripture:

  • Numbers 14:18, 33

Numbers 14:33 says:

And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms…”

Israel’s rebellion against God caused their children to suffer the consequences of their parents’ unbelief. Because the older generation rebelled, complained, and refused to trust God, the next generation wandered in hardship.

This reveals that rebellion can delay blessings not only for one person, but for entire families and future generations.

How This Curse Enters:

  • Unbelief toward God

  • Complaining and rebellion

  • Rejecting God’s instructions

  • Fear replacing faith

  • Persistent disobedience

Many families today experience cycles of instability, confusion, poverty, homelessness, broken relationships, and spiritual wandering because sin opened the door long ago.

3. The Curse of Idolatry

Scripture:

  • Deuteronomy 5:9-10

Deuteronomy 5:9 says:

…visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.”

Idolatry is not only bowing before statues. Anything placed above God becomes an idol. Money, lust, power, occult practices, celebrities, false religion, addiction, self-worship, and even people can become idols.

Idolatry opens the door to spiritual deception and demonic bondage because it replaces God with something corrupted.

How This Curse Enters:

  • Worship of false gods

  • Occult involvement

  • Witchcraft and sorcery

  • Obsession with materialism

  • Loving sin more than God

  • Trusting man instead of the Lord

Idolatry corrupts the heart and blinds people spiritually, often leading entire households away from truth.

4. The Curse of Serving Strange Gods

Scripture:

  • Joshua 24:19-20

Joshua 24:20 says:

If ye forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt…”

God warned Israel that serving false gods would bring judgment and calamity.

Serving strange gods includes participation in false religions, occult spirituality, divination, sorcery, astrology worship, and practices that oppose the Word of God.

How This Curse Enters:

  • Rejecting the true God

  • Mixing paganism with worship

  • Seeking spiritual power outside of God

  • Consulting psychics, mediums, or occult practices

  • Following false teachings knowingly

These practices invite spiritual darkness and oppression into lives and households.

5. The Curse Upon a Household Because of Evil

Scripture:

  • I Kings 21:29

1 Kings 21:29 speaks concerning King Ahab:

…in his son’s days will I bring the evil upon his house.”

Ahab’s wickedness brought judgment upon his household. Leaders and parents have spiritual influence over their homes. When authority figures embrace evil, entire households can suffer consequences.

How This Curse Enters:

  • Corrupt leadership

  • Abuse of authority

  • Murder, injustice, and oppression

  • Leading others into sin

  • Refusing correction from God

Sin in leadership positions often spreads destruction through entire families and communities.

6. The Curse of Former Iniquities

Scriptures:

  • Psalms 79:8

  • Isaiah 64:9

Psalms 79:8 says:

O remember not against us former iniquities…”

Isaiah 64:9 says:

…neither remember iniquity for ever…”

These verses reveal the cry for mercy from the consequences of past sins. Former iniquities can continue producing sorrow long after the original sin was committed if repentance never truly occurred.

How This Curse Enters:

  • Unconfessed past sins

  • Generational rebellion

  • Continuing sinful patterns

  • Hardened hearts toward conviction

Many people inherit emotional pain, spiritual oppression, family division, and destructive habits rooted in past generations.

7. The Curse of Wicked Dealings and Dishonesty

Scripture:

  • Micah 6:11

Micah 6:11 says:

Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights?”

Wicked balances refer to dishonesty, corruption, fraud, manipulation, and unjust gain. God condemns deceitful practices because they oppress others and pervert righteousness.

How This Curse Enters:

  • Cheating others

  • Financial corruption

  • Lying and manipulation

  • Fraudulent business practices

  • Taking advantage of people

Dishonesty brings spiritual corruption and invites judgment because God is a God of truth.

8. The Curse of Unrepented Wickedness

Scripture:

  • Nahum 1:3

Nahum 1:3 says:

The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked…”

God is patient and merciful, but persistent wickedness without repentance eventually brings judgment.

This curse enters when people continually resist conviction and choose evil while expecting no consequences.

How This Curse Enters:

  • Hardened rebellion

  • Refusing repentance

  • Mocking righteousness

  • Delighting in evil

  • Persistent sinful lifestyles

God’s mercy calls people to repentance, but continual rejection of truth eventually brings destruction.

How Are These Curses Broken?

The good news is that Jesus Christ came to deliver people from sin, bondage, darkness, and condemnation. True repentance, faith in Christ, obedience to God, and surrender to the Holy Spirit break the power of sin and iniquity.

The curse is broken when a person:

  • Repents sincerely before God

  • Turns away from sin

  • Rejects idolatry and wickedness

  • Forgives others

  • Walks in obedience to Christ

  • Renounces occult and sinful practices

  • Seeks holiness through the Holy Spirit

The Lord desires mercy and restoration, not destruction. God can restore what generations of sin have damaged when people humble themselves before Him.

Ezekiel 18:20 says:

The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father… the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him…”

This shows that through repentance and righteousness before God, a person does not have to continue under the bondage of former iniquities.

Through Jesus Christ there is forgiveness, cleansing, deliverance, and freedom for those who truly turn to God with all their heart.

Jesus died on the cross (wooden tree) to dear our sins and offers all of humanity an opportunity to be cleansed by His sacrifice in the shedding of his blood to break every curse that is written in the book of the law (the old testament) Torah also called the Pentateuch that was given and revealed to Moses on Mount Sinai.

The the New Testament method in which God choose to break any of the curses written in the book of the law is deliverance from demons.”

These “demons” or (entities without physical bodies) and are unseen to the human eye yet they are at work in the earth to devour and destroy peoples lives and are responsible for bringing curses all humanity by getting people to sin against God through disobeying his word. The are also responsible to enforce every curse found in the scriptures, just as when Adam and Eve were cursed by God when they opened the door to Satan in the garden of Eden.

The New Testament scripture warns and advises us that the devil (and all of his demons) are still working against all of humanity, and that it is up to us individually to be aware and resist them.

2 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

James 4:7Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Ephesians 4:27Neither give place to the devil.

All of the devils works is what Jesus came to destroy from peoples lives, only if we first and foremost believe the teachings of Jesus when he instructed his disciples to go into all the world and cast them out.

1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

Satan’s goal is to get people to commit sin which open the door to the devil and his demons to start devouring peoples lives. The devil knows the word of God, and demons know that if they can get people in sin then they will have an “entry point” by which they can enter a person physical body legally because sin causes death.

Romans 8:10And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

When anyone commits sin, they are bringing death and condemnation upon their own body which can include a curse until they have repented of the sin they commit. Sin open the door to the devil, and allows demons to begin enforcing the wage for that sin.

Romans 6:23For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

So should anyone continue in their sin? NO because it brings spiritual and physical death including sicknesses and diseases that the old testament law informed us about.

Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

The Apostle Paul understood these truths and this is why he tells us that we all must mortify (put to death) the deeds of the flesh so we can live and experience the abundant life that Jesus promised in John 10:10. The abundant life is not about accumulating earthly riches, but about becoming free by the Spirit of God.

Romans 8:13-15For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.  .

The Paul reminds us that we have received the bondage or (slavery to the curses written in the law) again that defeats us, but we have received the Holy Spirit that liberates us.

2 Corinthians 3:17Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

How is it that one is liberated from these curses because of sin? Through receiving deliverance by the Holy Spirit from the demons that caused the curses.

Look at what Jesus said in Matthew.

Matthew 12:28But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.

Jesus was teaching two things in that verse. The first is that it is the Holy Spirit that is driving the demons out of the person. Second, anyone who humbles themselves before God to receive deliverance from demons is receiving “THE KINGDOM OF GOD” coming unto them the very moment they start receiving deliverance from evil spirits that caused curses either from their sins, or the sins of their forefathers (generational curses) that can only be broken by the Holy Spirit when one repents and turns away from their sins.

Living in sin causes even sickness and many times these sicknesses and diseases can only be broken and stopped when a person is delivered from the demons which caused them. This is why Jesus gave the disciples power (the authority) to deal with these demons so people can be healed. The first disciples were the first to learn about this directly from Jesus, and were the first to go out and start casting demons out of people so they can be healed.

Matthew 10:1And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

Why did Jesus say “cast them out” and not cast them off? Because sin opens the door to the devil and sickness and disease.

If you do not believe that sin can cause sickness and disease, lets look at a man who was crippled for thirty eight years and how sin caused his sickness.

John 5:2-9 (The Physically Sick Man)

2Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. 3In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. 4For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. 5And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years6When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? 7The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. 8Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. 9And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

What caused this man to be sick for thirty eight years? Continue reading…

John 5:14-15 (The Mans Sickness Was Because Of His Sin)

14Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee15The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.

Jesus identified the mans sickness because of sin then tells him to “…sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee”.

What worse can come upon him then thirty eight years of not being able to walk? The man was in terrible physical condition and Jesus tells warns him that if he returns to his sin he would be in worse condition then he was before he was healed.

Jesus forgave the man of his sin and the moment he was forgiven of whatever sin he committed he was completely healed. Here is more evidence showing the healing can also come through the forgivness of sins.

James 5:13-16

13Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. 14Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. 16Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

  1. Sin clearly causes sickness, and forgiveness of those sins clearly heals a person.

and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him

Now lets look at how to be forgiven from sins that can and do cause sickness.

First we must understand a few things about sin and forgiveness:

  1. Sin has a wage or “payment” that one receives when they commit sins. Romans 6:23

  2. Sin has a debt that must be paid. (Jesus paid for our sins on the cross). Matthew 6:12

  3. Everyone sins, therefore there are things in ones life that causes death and sickness 1 John 1:8

  4. Sin must be confessed to God. 1 John 1:9

  5. If sin is confess to God we can be cleansed of the sin. 1 John 1:9

  6. Only God can forgive sins. Luke 5:21

  7. When Jesus sees we have faith in his forgiveness we are forgiven and healed. Luke 5:20

When God forgives our sins we are made whole and healed.

Luke 5:17-26
17And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them18And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. 19And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. 20And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee21And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? 22But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? 23Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? 24But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. 25And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. 26And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.

What we’ve learned here in this blog today is that sin causes sickness and opens the door to the devil, sin needs to be repented of, everyone has sinned, only God can forgive our sins, and when forgiveness of sin is granted by God when we confess our sins, we are healed and can receive his delivering power.
