If My People Will Return: 2 Chronicles 7:14 A Call to Healing Through Repentance for All People & Nations

By Pastor Joel – Open Heaven Christian Church – Fisher, Arkansas

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
— 2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV)

A World in Need of Healing

The nations of the earth are filled with confusion, violence, corruption, pride, hatred, division, and spiritual darkness. Many people cry out for peace, justice, healing, and restoration, yet continue walking in ways that oppose the righteousness of God. Humanity seeks solutions through governments, wealth, technology, entertainment, religion, social media interaction, and human wisdom, but the deepest wound in the world is still the problem of sin that distracts people from God’s healing.

God appeared and spoke to Solomon after the dedication of the temple and revealed a powerful truth that still speaks to all today: when people turn away from Him, destruction follows, but when people truly repent and seek Him, mercy, restoration, and healing can be found.

The Lord’s call has never been merely about outward religion that distracts people from what the Lord is really calling “his people” to, it is about turning away from wicked ways through repentance. God desires repentance from the heart.

In the gospel of Luke we are told that some came to Jesus to tell him about eighteen people who were worshiping in the temple when the Tower of Siloam fell on them, Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? Then Jesus said this to them implying it does not matter who it is, judgment would come upon all who are unrepentant in the following verse:

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Luke 13:3

As if it were not enough, Jesus tells them twice to repent.

I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.Luke 13:5

God’s Pattern for Restoration

In 2 Chronicles 7:14, God gave four conditions for healing and restoration:

1. Humble Themselves

Pride is the greatest barriers between humanity and God. Nations exalt themselves. Leaders exalt themselves. People exalt themselves. Many no longer fear the Lord or acknowledge His authority.

Yet Scripture says:

God resist the proud, but gives grace unto the humble.” — James 4:6

True repentance begins when people stop justifying their actions and honestly before God is acknowledge, and their need for God’s grace and mercy is also acknowledged in true humility before the Lord. Humility means recognizing that no nation, church, or individual can save themselves apart from the mercy or grace that can only come from God.

2. Pray

Prayer is more than repeating religious words. True prayer is crying out to God sincerely from the heart for his grace and mercy. Many today think that Jesus came to establish beautiful church buildings where people can come and gather to sing uplifting songs and nice fellowship to worship the Lord, however the truth is if Jesus who was a carpenter by trade wanted to establish beautiful buildings where people can meet to do what they want to worship God, he would have called professional carpenters to build beautiful establishments instead of tax collectors, fishermen, and sinners that believed and repented to promote His gospel.

And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.Matthew 21:13

Many people only pray when disaster comes, but God desires repentance and continual fellowship and dependence upon Him. Prayer is an act of surrender that acknowledges that heaven rules above the kingdoms of men.

Throughout Scripture, whenever people genuinely cried out to God with repentance, He responded with mercy.

The Lord is still listening.

3. Seek God’s Face

Many seek blessings, protection, prosperity, or miracles, but few truly seek the face of God Himself and God knows who these type of worshipers are. There is nothing wrong in seeking God for help and healing and even his deliverance, but when these things supersede worshiping God in truth, the Lord knows it.

In the gospel of Luke we learn about ten people who were sick with leprosy and Jesus healed all ten of them, but only one returned to thank and worship the Lord. When the one person returned, Jesus asked him where are the other nine that also were healed? The other nine only needed God when they needed something from God as many are doing today.

And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where arethe nine? Luke 17:17

God does not want empty ceremonies without obedience. He desires hearts that long for truth, holiness, righteousness, and communion with Him. God is seeking those who “Worship him in truth” not just out of necessity because things in life have gone wrong.

God responds to people who worship him in spirit and in truth.

God isa Spirit: and they that worship him must worship himin spirit and in truth. John 4:24

And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13

Seeking God means turning away from pride and idols of the heart:

  • pride
  • greed
  • hatred
  • rebellion
  • false religion
  • false worship
  • self-worship
  • materialism

A nation cannot truly be healed while rejecting the ways of God.

4. Turn From Wicked Ways

Repentance is not merely feeling guilty. Repentance means turning away from doing evil to others and turning toward God.

The world often celebrates what God calls evil and mocks what God calls holy. Yet the Lord still extends mercy to those willing to repent.

Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him…” — Isaiah 55:7

God sees:

  • corruption
  • violence
  • deception
  • all immorality
  • hatred
  • oppression
  • greed
  • unforgiving heart
  • hypocrisy
  • double mindedness toward God
  • false worship
  • abuse of power
  • hardened hearts

Nothing is hidden from Him.

Yet even now, His mercy and grace is still available to those who will turn back to Him with a pure heart. Jesus who is the living Word is still the same as when he walked upon the earth He created, He changes not.

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth. John 1:14

God’s Promise to the Repentant

The Lord gave three promises:

“I Will Hear From Heaven”

God is not deaf to sincere repentance made in true humility and sincerity before Him. Though He is holy and righteous, He is also merciful and compassionate.

It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23

Every morning God extends his mercy to anyone that will call on the Lord for his mercy.

“I Will Forgive Their Sin”

Forgiveness is one of the greatest expressions of God’s mercy. Through repentance and faith, sin can be forgiven and hearts can be made clean before God when we approach God in truth through prayer.

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us oursins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 1 John 1:8-10

The first step in receiving forgiveness from God is admit our sins and begin confessing them one by one until we are cleansed from so healing can begin. This requires a humbling of ones self and ego that sometimes may think everything seems okay then God steps in and humbles us because we refuse to admit in “truth” what we do or we justify it through the pride of.

But God isthe judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another. Psalm 75:7

Jesus said it this way:

And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.Matthew 23:12

Abased in that verse means humbled, and whosoever in that verse is anyone, Christian or Not.

“I Will Heal Their Land”

Wickedness destroys nations and people from within. It corrupts justice, weakens families, spreads violence, and hardens hearts. But God is able to restore what sin has broken.

Healing begins spiritually before it manifests outwardly, this is why Jesus taught to clean the “inside” first so the “outside” can be cleaned.

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excessThoublind Pharisee, cleanse first that which iswithin the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Matthew 23:25-26

Many today never allow God to clean those deep seeded seeds of wickedness within them, they focus on how they appear before all men to cover up what is really inside them yet Jesus said to “first” clean what is inside.

One may ask, what might be inside of me? The answer is simple when we look at our own heart and actions. Many are filled with pride, arrogance and rebellion, all forms of idolatry, unforgiveness, selfishness, egoistic behavior, bitterness, resentment, jealousy, self-righteousness, and then we wonder why has God not healed me?

Many are distracted by trying to find and fix the faults of others while ignoring and neglecting their own faults. The question God is asking all of us is this, how can anyone minister healing or correction to others while ignoring our own faults and sins? One must come to a place in their life when they no longer want to be a “hypocrite” before God or others in a religious sense and come to this realization that Jesus taught in scripture, otherwise the healing one needs cannot flow.

Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye. Matthew 7:5

A Warning to Religious People

This verse begins with the words:

If my people…”

God first called His own people to repentance.

Many claim to know God while continuing in pride, hatred, hypocrisy, unforgiveness, and disobedience. Outward religion cannot replace inward transformation that comes from God alone. People must change their mind and humble themselves or God will in due season humble them.

The patterns of the world are leading many into religion, but not into a true relationship with God because the mind needs to be renewed by God and His Word, when one neglects this, they will never come to truly understand the perfect will of God the Father.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what isthat good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2

If his people ignore the call of God to true repentance, nothing in their lives will change. Pride and self-will stands in the way and block the living water that comes from the Holy Spirit.

In the last day, that great dayof the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified. John 7:37-39

God does not desire performances, traditions, or appearances without genuine obedience and repentance of a life that continues in pride.

Jesus warned of people who honored God with their lips while their hearts remained far from Him.

The Lord is calling for true repentance, not empty religion and empty words.

The Call to Every Nation

This message is not only for individuals. Entire nations need repentance.

Governments cannot heal the human heart. Wealth cannot remove guilt of idolatry. Entertainment cannot fill spiritual emptiness. Human wisdom cannot replace the fear of God.

The world needs repentance and a holy fear of the Lord.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased. If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it. Proverbs 9:10-12

The Lord still calls people everywhere:

  • humble yourselves
  • pray
  • seek His face
  • turn from wickedness

God’s mercy is still extended to all who truly seek Him.

Jesus Christ is the Door of Mercy

The greatest expression of God’s mercy was revealed through Jesus Christ, who came to call sinners to repentance.

I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” — Luke 5:32

Through Christ, forgiveness, reconciliation, and spiritual renewal are offered to all who believe and turn to God sincerely.

No person is beyond the reach of God’s mercy if they are willing to repent and come to Him in truth.

Exhortation

The condition of the world is not merely political, social, or economic. At its deepest level, it is spiritual.

The answer God gave long ago in2 Chronicles 7:14still speaks powerfully today:

  1. humble yourselves
  2. pray
  3. seek His face
  4. turn from wicked ways

The Lord still hears.
The Lord still forgives.
The Lord still heals.

But the call remains urgent:

Repent, seek the Lord while He may be found, and return to Him with all your heart.

In The Holy Bible, specifically in 2 Chronicles 7:14, God was responding to Solomon after the dedication of the temple. Solomon had just finished building the house of the Lord, and God appeared to him at night with both a promise and a warning.

The verse is part of a larger covenant message. God told Solomon that there would be times when judgment would come upon the land because of wicked sin:

  • drought (“shut up heaven that there be no rain”)
  • locusts destroying crops
  • pestilence among the people

These were covenant judgments connected to Israel’s obedience or disobedience to God. God was explaining how restoration could come if the people repented by humbling themselves before God.

The verse says:

“If my people, which are called by my name…”

This is speaking first to Israel — the covenant people who bore God’s name. They were not ignorant nations; they were people who already knew the Lord but had drifted from Him as many have today.

God then gave four conditions and a specific order for restoration to occur:

  1. Humble themselves
Pride was often the root of rebellion. Humility meant acknowledging their sin and dependence upon God.
  2. Pray
They were to cry out sincerely to God instead of trusting idols, kings, armies, or themselves.
  3. Seek my face
This means more than asking for help. It means desiring God Himself — seeking His presence, favor, and righteousness.
  4. Turn from their wicked ways
This is repentance. God was not asking for religious words only, but an actual turning away from sin and disobedience.

Many today have this order backwards. They seek God for healing, but never turn from wickedness. Never seek his face, never pray, and never humble themselves. The Lord who set this order will only respond to the obedience in which the order was given. God will not bend to our will, we must bend to His and come to the conclusion of this reality and say “YOUR WILL BE DONE” on earth as it is in heaven.

God gave three promises in 2 Chronicles 7:14:

  1. “I will hear from heaven”
God would respond to genuine repentance.
  2. “Will forgive their sin”
    Their rebellion could be pardoned.
  3. “Will heal their land”
The judgment affecting the nation — famine, disease, destruction, drought — would be removed and restoration would come.

This verse reveals an important biblical principle: God desires repentance more than outward religion or self-righteous justification. Even after judgment, He leaves room for mercy if people truly turn back to Him.

The surrounding verses make this even clearer. In 2 Chronicles 7:19-22, God warns Solomon that if Israel turned to idols and forsook His commandments, the nation and the temple itself would face destruction. That eventually happened when Judah fell into idolatry and was taken into Babylonian captivity. The First Temple was destroyed by the Babylonian army under King Nebuchadnezzar II in 586 BC.

Spiritually, many believers also apply 2 Chronicles 7:14 today as a principle of repentance and restoration. While the direct covenant context was ancient Israel, the call to humility, prayer, seeking God, and repentance reflects themes found throughout Scripture.

Related KJV passages include:

  • Jeremiah 29:13 “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”
  • Isaiah 55:7 “Let the wicked forsake his way… and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him.”
  • Joel 2:13 “Rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God…”
  • 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins…”
