In a world increasingly divided by borders, beliefs, and backgrounds, it is easy to restrict our kindness to those who look, think, and believe like us. We naturally gravitate toward our own communities. However, the call to love was never meant to be confined to a single group, religion, or culture. It is a universal mandate. True love—unconditional and boundless—is meant for all of humanity.
If we want to see the world heal, we must learn to look past our differences and extend love to every person we meet, simply because they are human.
The Universal Mandate of Love
For Christians, the instruction to love is not a selective suggestion; it is a foundational command. But more than that, it is a blueprint for how we should treat every human being on the planet, regardless of their faith or background.
Scripture explicitly pushes us past the comfort of our own circles:
• Love Your Neighbor as Yourself (Mark 12:31): When Jesus was asked about the greatest commandments, He stated we must love God, and closely followed it with, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” He didn’t say love your Christian neighbor, your wealthy neighbor, or the neighbor who agrees with you. A neighbor is anyone within your reach.
• Extending Love to the Stranger (Leviticus 19:34): Long before the modern era, biblical law demanded radical hospitality: “The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt.” This is a direct call to see humanity in the outsider.
• Breaking Boundaries (Luke 10:25-37): In the famous Parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus used a cultural and religious outsider—a Samaritan—to show what true love looks like. The religious elite walked past a dying man, but the outsider stopped, bandaged his wounds, and paid for his care. Jesus used this story to prove that our “neighbor” is anyone in need of compassion.
• Loving Beyond Merit (Matthew 5:44-46): Jesus challenged His followers to a higher standard of love: “If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?” He calls us to love unconditionally, reflecting a Creator who sends rain and sunshine on the righteous and the unrighteous alike.
Seeing Others Through Heaven’s Eyes
Unconditional love requires a shift in perspective. It means training ourselves to stop seeing people through the lenses of political affiliation, nationality, race, or religion. Instead, we must see them as God sees them: as individuals of immense value, created in the divine image (Imago Dei), and worthy of dignity, respect, and care.
When we look at humanity through this lens, judgment fades and empathy takes its place. We stop asking, “Does this person deserve my kindness?” and instead ask, “How can I show them that they matter?”
Becoming an Agent of Change
The world doesn’t change through massive, overnight shifts. It changes through individual people making a conscious choice to act differently. You can be that catalyst. By choosing to smile at a stranger, offer help to someone from a different background, or listen to a perspective that challenges your own, you become an agent of healing in a fractured world.
Let us step outside our comfort zones and dare to love humanity wildly, fiercely, and without conditions.
A Prayer to See as God Sees
If you want to cultivate this kind of love in your heart, join us in this prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Create in me a clean heart and a renewed mind. Remove the blinders of prejudice, bias, and fear that prevent me from seeing your creation clearly. Teach me to look at every human being—regardless of their faith, race, nationality, or lifestyle—through Your eyes of grace and infinite worth.
Break my heart for what breaks Yours. Where there is division, let me sow unity. Where there is hatred, let me bring love. Forgive me for the times I have withheld kindness or judged others based on outward appearances.
Make me a true agent of change in this world. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit so that Your unconditional love flows through me to everyone I encounter. Let my words build up and my actions bring healing, so that through my life, humanity might catch a glimpse of Your boundless compassion.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
