How to Know and Do the will of God

KNOWING AND DOING THE WILL OF GOD.

By Pastor Joel – Open Heaven Christian Church – Fisher, Arkansas.

Part 1: Knowing the will of God.

1. Know God’s Word (The Bible)

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Psalm 119:105 (KJV)

The will of God is primarily revealed through His written Word. By studying the Bible regularly, you gain wisdom, principles, and direct commands that guide your decisions and character.

2. Seek God in Prayer

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally… and it shall be given him.”
James 1:5 (KJV)

Prayer is essential for discernment. Ask God to show you His will and be patient and attentive to His leading.

3. Be Led by the Holy Spirit

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
Romans 8:14 (KJV)

God’s Spirit guides believers in truth and convicts the heart. Stay sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s direction through inner peace, conviction, or discomfort.

4. Live a Surrendered Life

“I beseech you therefore… that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice… that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
Romans 12:1–2 (KJV)

Don’t conform to the world; renew your mind through God’s truth. The more surrendered your heart is, the clearer His will becomes.

5. Obey God’s Moral Will

“For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication.”
1 Thessalonians 4:3 (KJV)

Much of God’s will involves holiness, love, humility, and obedience to His commandments. If you’re walking in sin, it becomes harder to discern His leading.

6. Walk in Love and Wisdom

“See then that ye walk circumspectly… understanding what the will of the Lord is.”
Ephesians 5:15–17 (KJV)

Live wisely, make the most of your time, and seek to love others—this aligns your life with God’s purpose.

7. Listen to Godly Counsel

“Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.”
Proverbs 11:14 (KJV)

Mature believers and spiritual leaders can help confirm God’s direction for your life.

Part 2: How to Do the Will of God.

1. Surrender Your Own Will

“Not my will, but thine, be done.”
Luke 22:42 (KJV)

Just as Jesus surrendered in the Garden of Gethsemane, doing God’s will begins with letting go of your own agenda, pride, and desires. It requires humility and submission.

2. Obey God’s Word

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”
James 1:22 (KJV)

Obedience is key. It’s not enough to just know what God says—you must act on it. Forgive, love, serve, avoid sin, and live as Christ lived.

3. Live by Faith

“But without faith it is impossible to please him…”
Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)
“The just shall live by faith.”
Romans 1:17 (KJV)

Doing God’s will often involves trusting Him even when the outcome is unclear. Faith in God’s promises helps you act boldly in obedience.

4. Serve Others with Love

“By love serve one another.”
Galatians 5:13 (KJV)

The will of God includes showing love, compassion, and kindness. Jesus said the greatest commandments are to love God and love your neighbor (Matthew 22:37–40).

5. Use Your Gifts to Glorify God

“As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another… that God in all things may be glorified.”
1 Peter 4:10–11 (KJV)

God gives each believer spiritual gifts and talents. Using them in service to others and for God’s glory is a vital part of doing His will.

6. Be Faithful in Your Calling

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.”
Colossians 3:23 (KJV)

Whether you’re a student, parent, worker, pastor, or artist—do your daily tasks for God’s glory. Being faithful in the little things honors God’s will.

7. Endure Trials with Patience

“After ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.”
Hebrews 10:36 (KJV)

God’s will doesn’t always mean an easy path. Sometimes doing His will involves suffering, testing, or waiting. Stay faithful through it all.

8. Follow Jesus Daily

“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
Luke 9:23 (KJV)

To do the will of God is ultimately to follow Jesus—becoming more like Him through daily self-denial, prayer, obedience, and love.
