Grammar Hammer

One of the most overlooked realities in Scripture is how much grammar shapes theology.
Not opinions.
Not denominational traditions.
Not modern interpretations.
Just grammar — the simple way language works.
Because in both Hebrew and Greek, the difference between IN and OF is not small.
It’s not stylistic.
It’s not interchangeable.
It’s structural.
It’s theological.
It’s foundational.
And when translators shift the grammar — even subtly — the meaning shifts with it.
1. Faith OF Christ vs Faith IN Christ
Paul writes:
“I live by the faith OF the Son of God.”
(Galatians 2:20)
The Greek phrase uses the genitive case, which overwhelmingly indicates source, not direction.
This is why the New Testament consistently presents Jesus as:
the author of faith (Hebrews 12:2)
the finisher of faith (Hebrews 12:2)
the faithful One (2 Timothy 2:13)
the One whose obedience makes many righteous (Romans 5:19)
the One whose faithfulness justifies (Romans 3:22, literal)
If He authors it, sustains it, and completes it,
then faith cannot originate in us.
This is why Paul says:
“The righteousness OF God is revealed from faith TO faith.”
(Romans 1:17)
Not from our faith.
Not from human faith.
But from His faithfulness, revealed to us.
The grammar protects the gospel:
faith OF Christ = His faithfulness
faith IN Christ = your effort
Only one of these aligns with grace.
2. Fruit OF the Spirit vs Fruit IN the Spirit
Paul writes:
“The fruit OF the Spirit is… self‑control.”
(Galatians 5:22–23)
Not fruit in the Spirit.
Not fruit empowered by the Spirit.
Not fruit activated through the Spirit.
Fruit OF the Spirit.
Meaning:
the Spirit is the source
the Spirit is the producer
the Spirit is the life behind the fruit
the Spirit is the one bearing it out
Jesus said:
“A branch cannot bear fruit by itself.”
(John 15:4)
And:
“Apart from Me, you can do nothing.”
(John 15:5)
Fruit is not a performance.
Fruit is not a moral achievement.
Fruit is not a spiritual discipline.
Fruit is the Spirit expressing His nature through you.
The grammar protects the truth:
fruit OF the Spirit = His nature
fruit IN the Spirit = your performance
Only one of these aligns with abiding.
3. Sons OF God vs “Little Gods”
John writes:
“To all who received Him… He gave the right to become children OF God.”
(John 1:12)
Not children in God.
Not children as gods.
Not children equal to God.
Children OF God.
Meaning:
born from God
deriving life out of God
belonging to God
participating in His life
It’s relational, not ontological.
It’s about source, not status.
“Sons of God” is a genitive of derivation —
it describes origin, not essence.
It means:
your life comes from God
your identity is rooted in Him
your nature is renewed by His Spirit
your belonging is secured by His grace
It does not mean:
you are divine
you possess deity
you are a god‑being
you wield God’s essence
The grammar protects humility.
4. “You Are Gods” — Jesus Was Speaking to Judges, Not Deities
When Jesus said:
“Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods’?”
(John 10:34)
He was quoting Psalm 82, where elohim refers to:
judges
rulers
legal authorities
Psalm 82 is a rebuke:
“How long will you judge unjustly?”
(Psalm 82:2)
These “gods” were failing in their duty.
Jesus wasn’t elevating humans to deity.
He was making a legal argument:
“If Scripture can call human judges ‘elohim’ because they represent God’s justice,
then My claim to be the Son of God is not blasphemy.”
It’s about representation, not divinity.
The grammar protects context.
5. The Balance of “OF,” “IN,” and “THROUGH”
This isn’t a battle between “OF” and “IN.”
Both are biblical.
Both are essential.
Both matter — but in different ways.
“OF Him” protects the source — everything begins in God.
“IN you” protects the indwelling — the Spirit truly lives in you.
“THROUGH you” protects the expression — grace becomes visible in your life.
Paul holds all three together:
“From Him and through Him and to Him are all things.”
(Romans 11:36)
From = OF
Through = THROUGH
To = IN / expression
This is the shape of grace:
What originates OF Him
lives IN you
and expresses THROUGH you.
This keeps the gospel Christ‑centered and keeps the believer’s identity intact.
6. The point isn’t to elevate one preposition over another, but to let Scripture speak in the categories it actually uses.
“OF” protects the source.
“IN” reveals the indwelling.
“THROUGH” shows the expression.
When we keep those distinctions clear, the gospel keeps its shape:
God is the origin, the Spirit is the indwelling life, and Christ is the faithfulness that carries us.
Grammar doesn’t replace grace — it protects it, and it gives us categories so that not everything is one big mixed soup.
