Prophecy and Fulfillment

Prophecy and Fulfillment — The Lamb Slain Before the Foundation of the World
Introduction

The Bible does not treat prophecy as human foresight or clever explanation. It presents prophecy as God’s eternal decree, spoken before creation and fulfilled in history. This is why the Scriptures say Christ was “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 13:8). Redemption was not improvised; it was foreordained.

Prophecy and Fulfillment in History
1. The Birthplace of the Messiah
Prophecy: “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah… out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel.” (Micah 5:2) Fulfillment: “After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea…” (Matthew 2:1) Point: Centuries before, God named the town. Jesus’ birth there was not chance but decree.

2. The Suffering Servant
Prophecy: “He was pierced for our transgressions… by his wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5) Fulfillment: “One of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear…” (John 19:34–37) Point: Isaiah’s words match the crucifixion scene. God spoke it, and God brought it to pass.

3. Betrayal for Thirty Pieces of Silver
Prophecy: “So they paid me thirty pieces of silver… throw it to the potter.” (Zechariah 11:12–13) Fulfillment: “They counted out for him thirty pieces of silver… they used the money to buy the potter’s field.” (Matthew 26:14–15; 27:5–7) Point: Exact detail, centuries apart. Not human foresight, but divine orchestration.

4. Casting Lots for His Garments
Prophecy: “They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.” (Psalm 22:18) Fulfillment: “They divided up his clothes by casting lots.” (Matthew 27:35) Point: David’s psalm describes crucifixion long before Rome existed. Only God’s decree explains this.

5. Resurrection Foretold
Prophecy: “You will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.” (Psalm 16:10) Fulfillment: “God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.” (Acts 2:31–32) Point: David foresaw resurrection. Peter declares it fulfilled in Christ.
The Eternal Lamb
Foreordained Before Creation
Revelation 13:8 — “The Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”
1 Peter 1:19–20 — “Christ… was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.”
Point: Redemption was decreed before humanity existed. The cross was not reaction but centerpiece.

Old Testament Foreshadowings
Genesis 22:8 — “God himself will provide the lamb.”
Exodus 12:5–7 — “…a lamb without blemish… put the blood on the doorframes.”
Isaiah 53:7 — “He was led like a lamb to the slaughter.”
Psalm 22:16–18 — “They pierce my hands and my feet… they cast lots for my garment.”
Point: Each foreshadowing shows the Lamb already decreed, centuries before Christ’s manifestation.

Why This Is Not Pattern Recognition or Human Explanation
Patterns fade: Human cycles don’t last centuries with precision. Crucifixion wasn’t even invented when David wrote Psalm 22.
Coincidence collapses: The sheer number and specificity of fulfilled prophecies make chance impossible.
Retroactive editing disproven: Manuscripts like the Dead Sea Scrolls show these prophecies existed long before Christ.

Symbolism insufficient: The apostles didn’t treat prophecy as vague archetypes — they proclaimed it as fulfilled reality.
Isaiah 46:9–10
“Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.”

Point: God declares the end from the beginning. His counsel stands, and He does all His pleasure — nothing can overturn His plan.
Job 42:2
“I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.”

Point: Job acknowledges that God’s purposes cannot be stopped. What He intends, He accomplishes.
Psalm 33:11
“The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations.”

Point: God’s plans are eternal, not temporary. They endure across generations.
Proverbs 19:21
“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.”

Point: Human plans may shift, but God’s purpose always prevails.
