Psalm 91 Sermon

🕊️ Under the Shadow of the Almighty — A Sermon on Psalm 91

📖 Scripture Reading: Psalm 91 (KJV)

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
(Psalm 91:1–2)

🌿 Introduction: Living in a Dangerous World

We live in a world filled with uncertainty — sickness, fear, spiritual attacks, and unseen dangers surround us daily. But in Psalm 91, God gives His children a divine promise of protection, peace, and presence. It is one of the most powerful chapters in all of Scripture, reminding us that those who dwell close to God live under His covering.

Psalm 91 is not merely a poetic promise — it is a covenant reality for every believer who abides in Christ. It is God’s assurance that when we make Him our home, no evil can overthrow us, and no fear can control us.

🕊️ 1. The Secret Place of the Most High (Psalm 91:1)

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

The “secret place” is not a physical location — it is a spiritual dwelling. It represents an intimate relationship with God, where the believer lives in continual communion with Him.
To dwell means to remain, not to visit occasionally. Many people visit God in prayer, but few abide in His presence. When we make the Lord our dwelling place — through prayer, worship, and obedience — we are surrounded by His divine protection.

🕯️ The closer you stay to God, the safer you are from the snares of the enemy.

🛡️ 2. God Our Refuge and Fortress (Psalm 91:2)

I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

Here, the psalmist makes a personal declaration of faith. He does not say “He might be” but “He is my refuge.”
A refuge is where we run when storms rage. A fortress is a stronghold against the enemy. When fear tries to enter your heart, confess boldly:

“The Lord is my refuge and fortress — I am safe in Him!”

Faith must be spoken. You overcome fear not by silence but by confessing the promises of God aloud.

🕊️ 3. Deliverance and Protection (Psalm 91:3–6)

Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

God promises deliverance from both hidden traps and deadly plagues. The “snare of the fowler” refers to the enemy’s secret schemes. The “noisome pestilence” speaks of sickness, pandemics, and destruction.

But praise God — His truth is our shield and buckler!
When we walk in His Word, the lies and attacks of the devil cannot prevail.

Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day.

Even in the darkest nights and in the fiercest battles, we are covered by His wings. Fear has no place in the heart that trusts in God.

🌅 4. The Promise of Preservation (Psalm 91:7–10)

A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

This is divine separation — when judgment or disaster comes, those who abide in Christ are preserved. God doesn’t promise that trouble will never appear around you; He promises it will not come near you.

Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

If God is your dwelling place, your home is covered by His presence. The blood of Jesus is stronger than any curse, sickness, or fear.

👼 5. Angels on Assignment (Psalm 91:11–12)

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

Heaven is not silent concerning you. God has appointed angels to guard your path, to fight for you, and to protect you from unseen dangers.
You are never alone — the armies of heaven stand watch over every believer walking in obedience to God’s will.

🐍 6. Authority Over the Enemy (Psalm 91:13)

Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

The lion represents open attacks; the serpent represents hidden deception. But in Christ, we have victory over both!
Jesus said in Luke 10:19,

Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy…

No demon, disease, or darkness can conquer a believer walking in the authority of Christ.

❤️ 7. God’s Personal Promise (Psalm 91:14–16)

Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

The psalm ends with God Himself speaking — not the psalmist. These are divine words of covenant. When you set your love upon God, He sets His protection upon you.

He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

What a promise! Not only will God deliver you, but He will honor you, satisfy you with long life, and reveal His salvation to you through Jesus Christ.

✝️ Conclusion: Dwell, Declare, Depend

Psalm 91 is not magic; it is relationship.
To live under the shadow of the Almighty, we must:

  1. Dwell — stay close to God daily in prayer and obedience.
  2. Declare — speak His promises over your life.
  3. Depend — trust Him fully, even in the storm.

When you live this way, no weapon formed against you shall prosper. You are covered, guarded, and guided — under the shadow of the Almighty.

🙏 Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your divine protection and love. Teach us to dwell in Your secret place and trust You in every situation. Cover us under Your wings and keep us from all evil. Let Psalm 91 be our daily confession and shield. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
