Romans 5:19 (KJV) For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

THE BIBLE DOES NOT TEACH SELF‑EFFORT. IT TEACHES DEPENDENCE ON GOD.

Many believers live with guilt, insecurity, and the constant feeling of “never being good enough.” But this is not because God demands more from them. It is because they were taught to rely on themselves for what only God can produce.

Scripture is overwhelmingly clear: Human effort cannot produce divine life. Only Christ in us can.

WE CANNOT PRODUCE GOODNESS OR OBEDIENCE FROM OURSELVES

Romans 7:18 says, “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing.” Paul does not say “some good thing.” He says no good thing.

John 15:5 says, “I am the vine, ye are the branches… for without me ye can do nothing.” Not “a little.” Nothing.

Galatians 2:20 says, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.” The old self is not improved. It is crucified. Christ becomes the source.

Philippians 2:13 says, “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” God supplies the desire. God supplies the action. God supplies the power.

This is why Ephesians 2:8 says salvation is “not of yourselves.” And Philippians 3:9 says righteousness is “not having mine own righteousness… but that which is through the faith of Christ.”

The Bible leaves no room for self‑generated obedience.

EVEN LOVE IS NOT A HUMAN ACHIEVEMENT

Many think “love” is something they must perform. But Scripture says otherwise.

2 Corinthians 5:14 says, “For the love of Christ constraineth us.” It is His love that moves us, not ours.

Galatians 3:22 says the promise comes “by the faith of Jesus Christ.” Not our faith. His.

Ephesians 3:17‑19 says Christ dwells in our hearts “by faith,” and that we are filled with “the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge.” A love beyond human understanding cannot come from human effort.

The command to love is not a demand on human ability. It is a revelation of what Christ Himself produces in us.

WHY GOD COMMANDS WHAT WE CANNOT PERFORM

God’s commands are not given so the flesh can try harder. They are given to reveal:

  1. The impossibility of human righteousness

  2. The necessity of Christ as our life

  3. The nature of the fruit the Spirit produces

  4. The death of self‑reliance

  5. The sufficiency of grace

Romans 8:4 says the righteousness of the law is fulfilled in us, not by us. The branch does not strain to bear fruit. It simply abides.

The command shows the shape of the fruit. Christ supplies the life that produces it.

WHY PEOPLE FEEL “NEVER GOOD ENOUGH”

When churches teach love, obedience, holiness, or righteousness as human responsibilities, they unintentionally preach law instead of grace.

Law always produces:

Guilt Fear Insecurity Burnout Shame Pretending Exhaustion

Because the flesh cannot do what only the Spirit can.

People are not failing God. They are failing a system God never authored.

THE NEW COVENANT CALLS US TO DEPENDENCE, NOT PERFORMANCE

The entire New Covenant can be summarized this way:

Not I, but Christ. Not my strength, but His. Not my righteousness, but His. Not my love, but His. Not my willpower, but His working in me.

Dependence is not weakness. Dependence is the design.

Christ is the Vine. We are the branches. Branches do not produce life. They receive it.

THE CONCLUSION SCRIPTURE MAKES UNAVOIDABLE

The Bible does not teach:

Try harder Do better Be more spiritual Love more Perform for God

The Bible teaches:

Abide Yield Trust Receive Depend

Because everything God commands, God Himself performs in the believer through Christ.

This is why Paul says in Galatians 2:20:

“Not I, but Christ liveth in me.”

This is the freedom of the Gospel. This is the rest Jesus promised. This is the life of dependence on God.
