The head and not the tail

Bought with a Price

Ye Are “Gods”: A Declaration of Belonging

When Jesus quotes Psalm 82:6—“I said, ‘You are gods’”—He isn’t elevating us to divine status but declaring our true ownership in the one true God. In context He responds to accusations of blasphemy:

“Jesus answered them, ‘Is it not written in your Law, “I said, you are gods”?’ If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be broken— do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, “You are blaspheming,” because I said, “I am the Son of God”?’” John 10:34–36 (ESV)

Jesus points out that those who receive God’s word bear His authority—and yet they remain created, contingent, and wholly owned by the Father’s purposes. This prepares us to see our redemption not as self-wrought divinity, but as purchase into His family.

 Christ’s Self-Giving for Our Redemption

Paul reminds Titus that Jesus didn’t hold back even “from Himself”—He gave His very life to rescue us.

“who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.” Titus 2:14 (NIV)

Context: Instructing the church on holy living, Paul calls believers to remember that Christ’s sacrifice purchased a people marked by purity and good works.

You Were Bought—Honor God with Your Body and Mind

In Corinth, Paul confronts believers living as though they owned themselves. He exhorts them to live in a way that reflects their true ownership in Christ.

“You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies and your minds.” 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (NIV)

 Ransomed by Precious Blood

Peter contrasts pagan “ransom”—silver or gold—with the infinitely greater price paid by Jesus Himself.

“knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.” 1 Peter 1:18–19 (ESV)

Redemption and Forgiveness through His Blood

Paul again celebrates the riches of God’s grace—freely given when He redeemed us in Christ.

“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding…” Ephesians 1:7–8 (NIV)

Purchased for God from Every Nation

At the heart of Revelation’s worship scene is this triumphant chorus: our purchase has global, eternal impact.

“They sang a new song: ‘You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.’” Revelation 5:9 (NIV)

 Do Not Become Slaves Again

Paul warns believers in Galatia about exchanging true freedom for other masters—human opinions, legalism, or sin—once bought at such a cost.

“You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of human beings.” 1 Corinthians 7:23 (NIV)

Because Christ paid the ultimate price—and declared us “gods” in the sense of His commissioned heirs—we belong entirely to Him. No merit of ours can add to His work, and no accusation can stand once He has set us free. It is important to understand he is the only power, the only Almighty, and we will always depend on him, furthermore we do not transcend to some magic state where our will dominates the reality around us, we never surpass Jesus or the Godhead, he is always the head and not the tail.

  1. Amen brother great blog and a much needed word for today! so many in the body of Christ are being told that they are “little gods” which is deceptive and it is the same lie that satan told Eve in the garden in Gen. 3
