When God Shows Up Unexpectedly: Finding Hope When Heaven Seems Silent – Isaiah 45:15

When God Shows Up Unexpectedly: Finding Hope When Heaven Seems Silent

By Pastor Joel – Open Heaven Christian Church – Fisher, Arkansas

“Truly thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour.” — Isaiah 45:15 (KJV)

Introduction: Where Is God When I Need Him Most?

Every believer experiences seasons when God seems silent.

There are moments when the prayers continue, yet the answers appear delayed. The tears fall in secret. The nights seem longer than the days. The burdens become heavier. You read your Bible faithfully, attend church, and continue praying, yet you wonder:

“Lord… where are You?”

If you have ever felt abandoned, forgotten, or overlooked by God, you are not alone.

Throughout Scripture, many of God’s greatest servants experienced these same emotions. Yet one truth continually emerges throughout the Bible:

God often appears when we least expect Him, in ways we never imagined, and at precisely the right moment.

His silence is not His absence.

His delay is not His denial.

His hiddenness is often preparation for a greater revelation of His glory.

The Lord has never abandoned His children. He has simply been working behind the scenes.

God’s Timing Is Perfect Even When We Don’t Understand It

One of the hardest lessons in the Christian life is learning to trust God’s timing instead of our own.

The Lord sees the entire picture while we only see today’s struggle.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 (KJV)

“He hath made every thing beautiful in his time…”

Notice the verse does not say our time.

It says His time.

God specializes in arriving at what appears to us to be the last possible moment—but His timing is never late.

Example 1: Abraham and Isaac—God Provided at the Last Moment

Genesis 22:1–14

God commanded Abraham to offer his beloved son Isaac as a sacrifice.

Can you imagine Abraham’s thoughts?

He had waited decades for this promised son.

Now God seemed to ask for the impossible.

Abraham climbed Mount Moriah with unanswered questions but unwavering faith.

Just as Abraham lifted the knife…

God spoke.

Genesis 22:11–12 (KJV)

“And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven… Lay not thine hand upon the lad…”

Then Abraham looked up.

Genesis 22:13–14 (KJV)

“And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns…”

The provision was already there.

God had prepared the answer before Abraham even reached the mountain.

Sometimes God waits until the last possible moment so we will know beyond doubt that He alone deserves the glory.

Example 2: Moses at the Red Sea

Exodus 14

Israel stood trapped.

The Red Sea was before them.

Pharaoh’s army was behind them.

There was no visible escape.

Fear spread throughout the camp.

Many probably believed this was the end.

Yet God was preparing one of history’s greatest miracles.

Exodus 14:13–14 (KJV)

“Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD… The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.”

Then something impossible happened.

God parted the sea.

The obstacle became the pathway.

The place where they expected death became the place of their greatest deliverance.

How often do we panic because we cannot see the road that God is about to create?

Example 3: Daniel in the Lions’ Den

Daniel 6

Daniel remained faithful despite a law forbidding prayer.

He was thrown into a den filled with hungry lions.

Imagine the long night.

No rescue.

No explanation.

No escape.

Yet while Daniel waited…

God was already there.

Daniel 6:22 (KJV)

“My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths…”

God did not keep Daniel out of the den.

He met Daniel inside it.

Sometimes God does not remove the trial because He intends to reveal His power through it.

Example 4: The Three Hebrew Men in the Fiery Furnace

Daniel 3

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to worship Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image.

Their reward?

A blazing furnace.

But something extraordinary happened.

Daniel 3:24–25 (KJV)

“…Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?… Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire… and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”

Jesus did not prevent the fire.

He entered it with them.

Your fiery trial may become the very place where you experience the closest fellowship with Christ.

Example 5: Mary and Martha—Jesus Arrived After Lazarus Died

John 11

Mary and Martha urgently sent word that Lazarus was sick.

Surely Jesus would come immediately.

But He didn’t.

He waited.

Lazarus died.

For four days the tomb remained closed.

Everything appeared hopeless.

When Jesus finally arrived, Martha said:

John 11:21 (KJV)

“Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.”

How many believers have silently prayed something similar?

“Lord… if You had answered sooner…”

Yet Jesus had a greater miracle planned.

John 11:43–44 (KJV)

“Lazarus, come forth.”

The dead man walked out alive.

Sometimes God’s delay creates the stage for an even greater display of His glory.

Example 6: Jesus Walking on the Water

Matthew 14:22–33

The disciples fought the storm all night.

Jesus was nowhere to be seen.

Then Scripture gives an incredible detail.

Matthew 14:25 (KJV)

“And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them…”

The fourth watch was just before dawn—the darkest hours before sunrise.

Jesus came when they had nearly exhausted every ounce of strength.

He often comes after we have exhausted our own ability so that we will depend entirely upon Him.

Example 7: The Road to Emmaus

Luke 24:13–35

Two discouraged disciples walked away from Jerusalem after Jesus’ crucifixion.

Their hopes had been shattered.

As they talked…

A stranger joined them.

They did not recognize Him.

They walked miles with Jesus without realizing it.

Only later were their eyes opened.

How many times has Christ walked beside us without us recognizing His presence?

God is often much closer than we realize.

God Is Always Working Behind the Scenes

One of the greatest promises in Scripture is this:

Romans 8:28 (KJV)

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God…”

Notice it says all things.

Not only the victories.

Not only the blessings.

Even the disappointments.

Even the unanswered prayers.

Even the waiting.

God never wastes pain.

He transforms it.

Silence Does Not Mean God Has Left You

Many believers mistake God’s silence for God’s absence.

But Scripture tells us otherwise.

Hebrews 13:5 (KJV)

“…I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”

Never means never.

There may be seasons when you cannot feel Him.

There may be days when heaven seems silent.

But feelings are not the measure of God’s faithfulness.

His promises are.

Sometimes God Is Doing Invisible Work

Imagine planting a seed.

For days…

Nothing appears.

No leaves.

No stem.

No flowers.

Yet beneath the soil, life is growing.

Roots are developing.

Strength is forming.

Preparation is happening.

Likewise, God often works beneath the surface of our lives before anything becomes visible.

Isaiah 64:4 (KJV)

“…neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.”

While you are waiting…

God is preparing.

God Often Uses Trials to Deepen Our Faith

Faith grows strongest not during comfort but during dependence.

James 1:2–4 (KJV)

“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;

Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

But let patience have her perfect work…”

Trials refine us.

Waiting matures us.

Dependence transforms us.

The very season you wish would end may be the season God uses to prepare you for the calling ahead.

Keep Trusting Even When You Cannot See

The Christian walk has never been about seeing everything clearly.

It has always been about trusting the One who sees everything.

Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Faith says:

“I don’t understand… but I trust You.”

Practical Encouragement While You Wait

If you are in a season where God seems silent, remember these truths:

  • Continue praying, even when the answers seem delayed.
  • Keep reading God’s Word, because His promises outlast your feelings.
  • Worship even in difficult seasons, as praise lifts your eyes from the problem to the One who is greater than it.
  • Refuse to let discouragement become unbelief.
  • Remember God’s past faithfulness. The God who carried you before has not changed.
  • Trust that every delay has a divine purpose, even if you cannot yet see it.

Jesus Understands Waiting

Even our Savior experienced what seemed like silence.

While hanging upon the cross He cried,

Matthew 27:46 (KJV)

“…My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

Yet through His death came resurrection.

Through suffering came salvation.

Through apparent defeat came eternal victory.

If God could bring the greatest triumph in history out of the darkest day the world has ever known, He is able to bring hope and purpose out of your present circumstances as well.

Final Encouragement

Perhaps today you feel like Abraham climbing a mountain without answers.

Perhaps you stand before a Red Sea with nowhere to go.

Perhaps you are sitting in a lion’s den, walking through a fiery furnace, standing outside the tomb of a dream that seems dead, or struggling against a storm that refuses to calm.

Take heart. God is with you!

The same God who provided a ram for Abraham, parted the Red Sea for Israel, shut the mouths of lions for Daniel, walked in the fire with the three Hebrew men, called Lazarus from the grave, and came to His disciples on the stormy sea is still the same today.

Malachi 3:6 (KJV)

“For I am the LORD, I change not…”

He has not forgotten your name.

He has not ignored your prayers.

He has not abandoned your future.

Even now, while you may not yet see His hand, He is faithfully at work. Every prayer you have offered has been heard. Every tear has been noticed. Every moment of waiting has purpose in His sovereign plan.

Do not give up.

Do not lose heart.

Keep trusting, keep praying, and keep walking by faith. Often, just beyond the moment when hope seems to fade, God reveals His presence in ways that leave no doubt that it was His hand alone.

One day you will look back and discover that what felt like divine silence was actually God’s unseen guidance, and what appeared to be a delay was His perfect timing. The God who has been faithful throughout all of Scripture will be faithful to you, for “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8, KJV).

Your breakthrough may be closer than you think, because God often shows up when we least expect Him—but He is never one moment too early or one moment too late.
