"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God:
I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."

Being Filled with the Holy Spirit

By Pastor Joel – Open Heaven Christian Church

🙏 Introduction

The Bible makes it clear that every believer is not only to receive the Holy Spirit but also to be continually filled with Him. To be “filled with the Spirit” means to be influenced, guided, and empowered by the Spirit of God in every area of life.

Ephesians 5:18 (KJV) – “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.”

🔥 John the Baptist’s Prophecy – Baptized with the Holy Ghost and Fire

Before Jesus began His earthly ministry, John the Baptist spoke of a greater baptism to come:

The Promise of Fire and Spirit

Matthew 3:11 (KJV) – “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. But he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire.”

Luke 3:16 (KJV) – “John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire.”

🔥 This prophecy was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost, when the disciples were filled with the Spirit and “cloven tongues like as of fire” sat upon each of them (Acts 2:3).

✨ What does “with the Holy Ghost and fire” mean?

  • The Holy Ghost – Empowering presence of God for salvation, transformation, and boldness.
  • Fire – Purification, passion, and God’s refining work in a believer’s life.

🕊️ Lesson: Jesus does not just cleanse us with water baptism but fills us with the Spirit’s power and fire to live holy and serve boldly.

🔥 The Day of Pentecost – The First Filling

Acts 2:4 (KJV) – “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

  • The disciples had been praying in one accord (Acts 1:14).
  • Suddenly, the Spirit came with power, filling the room and each believer.
  • This filling gave them boldness, supernatural speech, and courage to proclaim Christ.

💡 Repeated Fillings of the Spirit

Acts 4:31 (KJV) – “And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.”

Even after Pentecost, the disciples were filled again and again, showing that the Spirit’s fullness is a continual experience.

🛡️ Biblical Examples of Spirit-Filled Believers

1. Stephen – Full of Faith and the Holy Ghost

Acts 6:5 (KJV) – “…they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost…”

  • Stephen’s Spirit-filled life was marked by wisdom, miracles, and bold testimony.
  • Even during martyrdom, he saw the glory of God (Acts 7:55).

2. Peter – From Fearful to Fearless

Acts 4:8 (KJV) – “Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel…”

  • Once a fearful denier, Peter became a bold preacher.
  • His Spirit-filled preaching led to 3,000 souls saved in one day (Acts 2:41).

3. Paul – Empowered for Ministry

Acts 9:17 (KJV) – “…that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.”

  • Paul’s ministry was marked by miracles, revelation, and endurance through trials.
  • He later urged believers to “walk in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16).

✨ The Results of Being Filled with the Spirit

  • 🕊️ Bold Witnessing – Acts 1:8
  • 🎶 Worship and Joy – Ephesians 5:19
  • 💬 Speaking with Grace – Colossians 4:6
  • 🛡️ Victory over Sin – Galatians 5:16
  • ❤️ Love and Unity – Romans 5:5

🙌 How Can I Be Filled with the Holy Spirit?

  1. Desire His Fullness – Matthew 5:6
  2. Pray and Ask – Luke 11:13
  3. Yield Daily – Romans 6:13
  4. Stay in God’s Word – Colossians 3:16
  5. Live in Obedience – Acts 5:32

🙏 Jude – Building Yourself Up by Praying in the Holy Ghost

Praying in the Holy Ghost

Jude 1:20-21 (KJV) – “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.”

✨ Truth from Jude:

  • Prayer in the Holy Spirit strengthens our faith.
  • It keeps us in the love of God and focused on Christ’s return.
  • Spirit-led prayer is a source of continual filling and renewal.

💪 Paul – The Spirit Helps Our Infirmities in Prayer

The Spirit’s Help in Our Weakness

Romans 8:26 (KJV) – “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”

✨ Truth from Paul:

Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance
disease, infirmity, sickness, weakness.
From asthenes; feebleness (of mind or body); by implication, malady; morally, frailty — disease, infirmity, sickness, weakness.
astheneia: Weakness, infirmity, sickness.

Noun – Dative Feminine Singular
Strong’s Greek 769: From asthenes; feebleness; by implication, malady; morally, frailty. Original Word: ἀσθένεια
Part of Speech: Noun, Feminine
Transliteration: astheneia
Pronunciation: as-then’-i-ah
Phonetic Spelling: (as-then’-i-ah)

NASB: weakness, weaknesses, sickness, sicknesses, ailments, diseases, ill
Word Origin: [from G772 (ἀσθενής – weak)]

1. feebleness (of mind or body)
2. (by implication) malady
3. (morally) frailty

  • We often don’t know how to pray or what to pray for.
  • The Holy Spirit intercedes through us when words are not enough.
  • This prayer strengthens us in weakness and keeps us in God’s will.

👉 Being filled with the Spirit happens through prayer, especially Spirit-led prayer.

🌟 Conclusion

Being filled with the Holy Spirit is essential for victorious Christian living. Jesus Christ Himself is the Baptizer who fills us with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Galatians 5:25 (KJV) – “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

🔥 When we walk in His Spirit and fire, our lives shine with God’s power, purity, and purpose.
