Bible Study: Choose Life — God’s Call to Covenant Faithfulness

By Pastor Joel – Open Heaven Christian Church

Introduction

From the beginning, God has always given mankind a choice. He never forces obedience—He invites it. The verse in Deuteronomy 30:19 is Moses’ closing exhortation to Israel as they prepare to enter the Promised Land. God lays two paths before them:

✅ Life & blessing
❌ Death & cursing

The same call is extended to every believer today: Our choices determine our spiritual destiny, our peace, and even blessings for generations after us.

1️⃣ God Gives Us Choices — And Consequences

God does not hide the stakes. He presents life and death clearly.

Supporting Scriptures:

📌 Joshua 24:15 (KJV)

choose you this day whom ye will serve… but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

📌 Proverbs 14:12 (KJV)

There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

Key Thought:
Even when a way looks right in our eyes, God’s Word is the ultimate standard of truth.

2️⃣ Choosing Life Means Choosing Obedience

To “choose life” is to obey God’s Word and walk in His ways.

📌 Deuteronomy 30:20 (KJV)

That thou mayest love the LORD thy God… obey his voice… for he is thy life…

📌 John 14:15 (KJV)

If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Key Thought:
Obedience is not legalism; it is love demonstrated.

3️⃣ God’s Commands Are For Our Good

When God asks us to obey, it is always for our benefit.

📌 Deuteronomy 10:12–13 (KJV)

What doth the LORD thy God require of thee… to keep the commandments of the LORD… for thy good?

📌 Psalms 1:1–3 (KJV)

Blessed is the man… his delight is in the law of the LORD… and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

Key Thought:
Spiritual prosperity and joy follow obedience.

4️⃣ We Cannot Choose Life Without God’s Help

We need God’s Spirit to live righteously.

📌 Ezekiel 36:26–27 (KJV)

A new heart… a new spirit… I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes…

📌 Philippians 2:13 (KJV)

For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

Key Thought:
God empowers what He commands.

5️⃣ Generational Blessing or Judgment

Our choices affect future generations.

📌 Exodus 20:6 (KJV)

shewing mercy unto thousands… of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

📌 Proverbs 20:7 (KJV)

The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

Key Thought:
Choosing life leaves a legacy of blessing.

Practical Application

Ask yourself daily:

  • Am I choosing obedience or convenience?
  • Am I living life according to God’s Word or my feelings?
  • Are my decisions leaving a godly legacy for my children?

🙏 Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for setting before me life and blessing through Your Word. Strengthen me to choose life daily. Help me walk in obedience, love, and faith. Empower me by Your Spirit to honor You and leave a godly legacy for generations.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

🏁 Conclusion

Deuteronomy 30:19 is not just a command — it is an invitation to life, blessing, and covenant fellowship with God. Every day we are choosing: life or death, obedience or rebellion, God’s way or our way.

Choose life. Choose Christ. Choose obedience.
