"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God:
I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."

Discover why Jesus commands us to love one another. A KJV Bible study blog with scriptures on God’s love, Christian living, and true discipleship in Christ.

📖 In the Bible, we are clearly commanded to love one another. Anyone who refuses to obey this command from the Lord Jesus Christ is walking in darkness. Such a person has not yet come to the truth in Christ Jesus and will remain in darkness until they repent of their sins and begin walking in the love of the Father, which comes to us by the Holy Spirit.

👉 Romans 5:5
“And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”

✝️ The Command to Love

Jesus directly commands all His followers to love one another. This is not optional — it is a commandment. The Lord expects us to love others in the same way He loved us. And how did He love? By willingly laying down His life for the world.

👉 John 13:34
“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”

👉 John 15:13
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

🚫 When Love is Absent

Believers who claim to be Christian but do not walk in the love of God the Father, who fail to show compassion toward their brothers, sisters, or even unbelievers, are called “LIARS” by God Himself. Why? Because they are denying both the command of Jesus and the very Word of God, whose nature is love.

👉 1 John 4:20-21
“20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 21And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.”

Such people are not only breaking Jesus’ command but are also in danger of hellfire on Judgment Day.

👉 Revelation 21:8
“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

👉 Revelation 22:14-15
“14Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. 15For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.”

🗣️ Lip Service vs. True Love

God delights in those who deal truthfully. But “lying lips” are an abomination to Him. Anyone can say with their mouth, “I love the Lord”, yet if hatred is in their heart, they are liars in God’s sight.

👉 Proverbs 12:22
“Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.”

1 John 3:18 “My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.”

Empty words mean nothing. On the Day of Judgment, our deeds and how we treated others will matter more than lip service. True worship is shown by obeying Jesus’ words.

Our actions and behavior toward others speak louder then our words in the sight of God.

👉 1 John 2:17
“And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”

👉 Mark 7:6
“He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.”

🔑 The Old and New Commandment

The Apostle John made it clear: loving one another was not a new commandment, but it was also renewed in Jesus Christ. Hatred is evidence of darkness; love is proof of walking in the light.

👉 1 John 2:7-11
“7Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. 8Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. 9He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. 10He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. 11But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.”

💡 Proof of Knowing God

The Scriptures are clear: anyone who claims to know God but does not walk in the love of the Lord is showing they do not actually know Him and are in darkness.

👉 1 John 4:8-14
“8He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 9In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. 12No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. 14And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.”

⚠️ Religious Without Love

When Jesus was on earth, He addressed people who were outwardly religious but had no love of God within them. Sadly, many today are the same. Jesus knows what is in every man no matter how well they may appear outwardly.

👉 John 5:42
“But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.”

Many study the Scriptures but miss the central truth: God is love, and all Scripture points to Jesus Christ. Eternal life comes only by repentance and faith in Him. When God the Father sent Jesus Christ into the world, He commanded his love toward us.

👉 Romans 5:8
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

👉 John 3:16-17
“16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”

Many today are searching the scriptures trying to find and understand God. What many do not realize is that the scriptures are pointing us all to Jesus who is the very image of God – (LOVE). When Jesus walked this earth he addressed people who were doing religious things, those people that Jesus addressed were called Pharisees, Scribes, and Teachers of the Law. What Jesus told them was astounding, Jesus told them that he knew that “the love of God was not in them” and many today who walk about cloaked in religiosity by doing all kinds of religious things but not walking in the Father’s love are being self-deceived thinking they will enter into heaven as the Pharisees, Scribes, and Teachers of the Law did in Jesus day.

👉 John 5:39-42
“39Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. 40And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. 41I receive not honour from men. 42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.”

Jesus knows exactly who has the love of God in them. These Pharisees, Scribes, and Teachers of the Law were told by Jesus that they were actually in so much darkness that their father was the devil.

John 8:42 “Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.“

The Pharisees, Scribes, and Teachers of the Law did many religious things as many do today, they had scrolls of the word of God, they had a temple to worship in, they even said the right things, but they did not have the love of God in them.

The Pharisees, Scribes, and Teachers of the Law knew the word of God but did not live the word of the Lord, they would quote the scriptures, but not do what God said. Sadly, like many today.

Matthew 23:1-3
“1Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, 2Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat: 3All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.”

Mankind can never love without Christ in their life. God “sheds” his love into our hearts by the working of the Holy Spirit, and if we allow him to change our hearts.

👉 Romans 5:5
“And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.”

🌍 Love as the Mark of a True Disciple of Jesus

The world will know we are disciples of Jesus by our love. Without it, even unbelievers can see that we are only being religious, not true followers of Jesus.

👉 John 13:35
“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”

God expects believers to lay their life down for their brothers and sisters.

👉 1 John 3:16
“Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.”

🏁 CONCLUSION

No matter what spiritual experiences or gifts we may have, if the love of the Father is not in us, we are nothing. Jesus commands us to love one another — genuine, sacrificial love. Without it, we are denying both the Lord and His Word.

👉 1 Corinthians 13
“1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.

4Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

8Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. 9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 10But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. 11When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. 13And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”
