"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God:
I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."
- Isaiah 41:10

🌾 The Harvest is Great, But the Laborers are Few

By Pastor Joel – Open Heaven Christian Church – Fisher, Arkansas

🙏 The Lord’s Call to the Harvest

In Matthew 9:37–38, Jesus Christ said to His disciples:
“Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.”

This powerful statement from our Lord reminds us that the world is full of souls ready to hear the Gospel and receive salvation, yet there are far too few willing to go into the field of ministry to labor for the Kingdom of God. The harvest represents the multitudes who are lost, hurting, and in need of Jesus Christ. The laborers are those who are called and sent to preach, teach, and share the Word of God faithfully.

⚠️ Excuses Are Not New

From the beginning of Scripture, we see men and women who made excuses when God called them to serve:

  • Moses said: “O my Lord, I am not eloquent… but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.” (Exodus 4:10)
  • Jeremiah cried: “Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.” (Jeremiah 1:6)
  • Gideon answered: “O my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” (Judges 6:15)

Yet God refused their excuses. He reminded Moses that He made the mouth. He told Jeremiah not to say, “I am a child.” He called Gideon a mighty man of valor. The Lord does not see as man sees—He equips those He calls. Excuses only hinder the harvest, but obedience brings glory to God.

💰 The Parable of the Talents

Jesus gave us a sobering warning in Matthew 25:14–30. A master entrusted his servants with talents (a large measure of money—silver or gold).

  • One servant received five talents and doubled them.
  • Another received two talents and doubled them.
  • But the servant who received one talent buried it in the earth.

When the master returned, he praised the faithful servants:
“His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.” (Matthew 25:23)

But to the one who hid his gift, the master said:
“Thou wicked and slothful servant… Take therefore the talent from him… And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 25:26, 28, 30)

Why was God angry? Because the servant wasted what was entrusted to him. God expects every believer to use their voices, gifts, talents, opportunities, money, and time for His glory. Fear, laziness, and excuses are unacceptable.

In the wolrd people use their voices, gifts, talents, opportunities, money, and time for the things that pertain to this world because that is all they know and they are not following Jesus. We as followers of Jesus must place our focus on the things that pertain to the kingdom of God. Jesus taught “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:21). As Christians our focus should be on things that are from above. (Clossians 3:2)

The Lord is holding all believers to accountability on how we use the resources God has given us. Many today focus only on this life as if they are going to life forever on earth. Jesus gave a parable about a rich fool who was only focused on things and possesions that pertain to this life.

The Parable of the rich fool is about a successful farmer received an inheritance and decides to tear down his old barns and build bigger ones to store his abundant harvest, planning to live a life of leisure. However, God calls him a fool because he is focused on material possessions and self-gratification rather than on God and being generous. The parable teaches that a person’s life is not measured by the amount of their possessions and that true security comes from being rich toward God, not from accumulating wealth for oneself.

The Parable of the Rich Fool

Luke 12:13-21
13And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. 14And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? 15And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. 16And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: 17And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? 18And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. 19And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. 20But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? 21So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

🥀 Lukewarm Christianity

Another danger we face today is complacency. Many are neither hot nor cold for God. Jesus spoke to the church of Laodicea with sharp rebuke:

“I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” (Revelation 3:15–16)

Lukewarm Christians are satisfied with comfort, distracted by worldly cares, and unwilling to labor in the harvest. They make excuses, delay obedience, or only serve halfway. God rejects such half-heartedness.

We also see complacency in other parts of Scripture:

  • The children of Israel delayed entering the Promised Land because of fear and unbelief (Numbers 13:31–33).
  • Samson, who toyed with sin, lost his strength and was blinded because he did not take his calling seriously (Judges 16:19–21).
  • Lot’s wife, who looked back longingly at Sodom, became a pillar of salt (Genesis 19:26).

These examples warn us that complacency and divided hearts hinder the work of God. The harvest requires urgency, zeal, and commitment.

⏳ The Urgency of the Harvest

Jesus said:
“Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.” (John 4:35)

The Apostle Paul declared:
“(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)” (2 Corinthians 6:2)

Beloved, time is short. Eternity is long. Every moment wasted is a soul slipping away without Christ.

🙌 Conclusion and Prayer

The harvest is great, the laborers are few, and the call is urgent. God has entrusted you with gifts and opportunities—do not bury them in the ground of excuses or lukewarmness. Be faithful, be bold, and be diligent.

Prayer:

“Heavenly Father, I thank You for calling me to be a laborer in Your harvest. Forgive me for every excuse, every moment of fear, and every lukewarm attitude of my heart. Lord, set me on fire with Your Spirit. Give me boldness to use my talents, gifts, and time for Your Kingdom. Send forth more laborers, and let me be counted among the faithful who will hear You say, ‘Well done, thou good and faithful servant.’ In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.”

🌾 The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few. Will you rise up and labor for the Lord?
