What little gods?

Pride says, I am above you. Entitlement says, I am owed by you. Greed says, I must take from you. Ego says, I define myself without you. Merit says, I earned this apart from you. Self‑empowerment (in the flesh) says, I can sustain myself without you.

The blindness is that each assumes autonomy — that life, worth, and security can be sourced from within. But the Word keeps pulling back the curtain:

  • Psalm 10:4In his pride, the wicked man does not seek Him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.

  • Proverbs 16:18Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

  • Luke 12:15Life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.

  • James 4:6God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.

  • Galatians 6:3If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves.

  • Jeremiah 9:23‑24Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know Me…

It’s like the same spiritual cataract — no matter the label, it clouds the eye to grace. The cure isn’t just “try to be humble” but a total re‑centering: beholding God until self‑illusion fades.

18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. - Matthew 28:18-20
